Chicken Parmesan, also known as Chicken Parmigiana, is a popular Italian-American dish that features breaded and fried chicken cutlets topped with marinara sauce and melted cheese. It is a delicious and hearty comfort food loved by many. Here's a basic recipe to make Chicken Parmesan at home:

Ingredients:

  • 4 boneless, skinless chicken breasts
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 2 large eggs, beaten
  • 1 cup breadcrumbs (or panko breadcrumbs for extra crispiness)
  • 1/2 cup grated Parmesan cheese
  • 1 cup marinara sauce (homemade or store-bought)
  • 1 cup shredded mozzarella cheese
  • Olive oil for frying
  • Fresh basil leaves for garnish (optional)

Instructions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).

  2. Prepare the chicken breasts by pounding them to an even thickness, about 1/2 inch thick, using a meat mallet or the bottom of a heavy pan. This ensures even cooking and tender chicken.

  3. Season the chicken breasts with salt and pepper on both sides.

  4. Set up a breading station: In three separate shallow dishes, place the flour in one, beaten eggs in another, and a mixture of breadcrumbs and grated Parmesan cheese in the third.

  5. Dredge each chicken breast in the flour, shaking off any excess. Then dip it into the beaten eggs, allowing any excess to drip off. Finally, coat the chicken with the breadcrumb-Parmesan mixture, pressing the breadcrumbs onto the chicken to adhere well.

  6. In a large skillet, heat enough olive oil over medium-high heat to cover the bottom of the pan. Once the oil is hot, add the breaded chicken breasts and cook until golden brown and cooked through, about 3-4 minutes per side. Cook in batches if needed, so as not to overcrowd the pan.

  7. Transfer the cooked chicken breasts to a paper towel-lined plate to remove any excess oil.

  8. In a baking dish, spread a thin layer of marinara sauce to coat the bottom. Place the cooked chicken breasts on top of the sauce.

  9. Spoon additional marinara sauce over each chicken breast, and then sprinkle shredded mozzarella cheese over the top.

  10. Bake in the preheated oven for about 15-20 minutes or until the cheese is melted and bubbly.

  11. Once done, remove the Chicken Parmesan from the oven, and if desired, garnish with fresh basil leaves before serving.

Chicken Parmesan is often served over spaghetti or other pasta, but it's equally delicious with a side of garlic bread or a simple green salad. Enjoy this tasty Italian-American classic!
