Mozzarella in Carrozza
Italian Fried Mozzarella Sandwich
Preparation Time: 15 minutes | Cooking Time: 10 minutes | Total Time: 25 minutes
Ingredients:
- Fresh mozzarella cheese, sliced
- White bread (preferably slightly stale), crusts removed
- Eggs, beaten
- Milk
- All-purpose flour
- Salt and pepper to taste
- Olive oil or vegetable oil, for frying
- Marinara sauce or tomato sauce, for dipping (optional)
Instructions
Lay out the slices of bread on a clean surface. Place a slice of mozzarella cheese on one slice of bread and top it with another slice, creating a sandwich.
In a shallow bowl, whisk together the beaten eggs and a splash of milk. Season with salt and pepper to taste.
Dip each mozzarella sandwich into the egg mixture, ensuring both sides are coated evenly. Let any excess egg mixture drip off.
Heat the olive oil or vegetable oil in a frying pan over medium heat. The oil should be deep enough to cover the entire sandwich.
Carefully place the coated sandwich into the hot oil and fry until the bread turns golden brown and crispy on both sides, and the mozzarella inside is melted and gooey. This should take a few minutes on each side.
Once the sandwiches are fried, remove them from the oil and place them on a plate lined with paper towels to drain any excess oil.
Cut the sandwiches into halves or quarters and serve them hot. You can serve them on their own or with a side of marinara or tomato sauce for dipping.
Enjoy your Mozzarella in Carrozza as a delightful and indulgent treat! Keep in mind that this is a rich and satisfying dish, so it's best enjoyed in moderation. Buon appetito!
